In the future, remote areas in Russia will have easier access to electricity, thanks to a tiny mobile nuclear power plant mounted on a special boat.
Interfax news agency reports that an $85 million contract has just been signed between Alexander Poluschkin, the deputy director of the Rosenergoatom nuclear power plant, and a Chinese shipyard. This mobile nuclear power plant project is set to commence in 2006, with a total investment exceeding $200 million, funded by the Russian national budget.
Completion of this project may take up to five years, after which the mobile nuclear power plant could reach the most remote villages in the European and Far Eastern regions of Russia.
This will be the world’s first mobile nuclear power plant.
