Two boys who took the antiviral drug Tamiflu exhibited unusual behaviors that led to their deaths: one ran into the path of a moving truck last year, and the other jumped from the ninth floor earlier this year, according to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
“This is the first report of deaths due to unusual behavior that cannot be ruled out as being related to this drug (Tamiflu),” an official from the Ministry stated.
On the Tamiflu label in Japan, there is a warning section that lists symptoms such as impaired consciousness, unusual behavior, hallucinations, and other psychological and neurological symptoms that could be dangerous side effects. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare is considering “renewing” this warning after deciding to bolster Tamiflu reserves in anticipation of an avian flu pandemic, as the number of avian flu-related deaths in Asia is rising.
