What is Pink Eye? What Causes This Annoying Disease to Spread? Let’s take a look at the infographic below to learn more about pink eye and effective prevention methods.
>>> Effective Prevention of Pink Eye
Treatment for Pink Eye
The treatment for pink eye depends on whether it is caused by bacteria, viruses, allergens, or other factors. Depending on the cause, pink eye may or may not require treatment.
Viral Pink Eye usually resolves on its own within a few days. To alleviate symptoms, patients can rinse and clean their eyes with saline solution and apply cold compresses to reduce swelling. If caused by the herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus (which causes chickenpox/shingles), or sexually transmitted infections, antiviral medications may be necessary. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to scarring of the eye or reduced vision. Antibiotics are ineffective against viral pink eye.
Bacterial Pink Eye presents with pus and signs of infection, requiring treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. It is important to complete the entire course of treatment even if symptoms improve and to follow up to check for any severe damage.
Allergic Pink Eye requires avoiding the allergen. As the allergic reaction subsides, the condition will improve. If allergic symptoms are severe and cause discomfort, doctors may prescribe oral medications or eye drops to alleviate symptoms.
In addition to hygiene and treatment, during the illness, it is important to pay attention to a suitable diet and rest. A nutritious diet rich in vitamins A, B, C, and K is recommended, including foods like chicken, salmon, eggs, pumpkin, tomatoes, carrots, papaya, strawberries, and beans. Avoid stimulants (alcohol, beer, or carbonated drinks) and hot foods (such as chili or garlic).
Due to Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Pink eye caused by STIs is not common but can be serious. Newborns may develop a severe form of pink eye that can impair vision. If you are pregnant and living with STIs, your baby may contract these bacteria during childbirth. Newborns may receive antibiotic ointment in their eyes to prevent infection.
Due to Autoimmune Diseases: If pink eye is due to an autoimmune condition, treating the underlying disease will also help treat pink eye. Consult your doctor for ways to manage symptoms until your eyes feel better.
Avoid overexertion, especially in stressful jobs. During this time, limit the use of electronic devices such as phones and computers, as prolonged use can strain your eyes and exacerbate the condition.
