Common vegetables such as potatoes and carrots may help combat the risk of bioterrorism, according to Italian researchers on November 17.
Speaking at a scientific conference between Italy and the United States, Italian scientists announced that a collaborative effort between experts from both countries has led to the development of a project on a type of “vegetable vaccine.”
According to the Italian scientists, these vegetables not only serve as food but also stimulate the production of antibodies, enhancing the human body’s natural resistance to diseases.
This is not the first time researchers have explored the potential of developing medical treatment methods by altering the genetic structure of plants to combat dangerous viruses in nature. This study is also examining other bioterrorism threats such as anthrax, which has been under bilateral research for more than two years. Approximately 16.5 million euros from public and private funding sources have been allocated to this project.
