Drinking 1-2 cups of coffee daily may help reduce the risk of high blood pressure |
Japanese medical researchers have recently discovered that consuming 1-2 cups of coffee each day may help lower the risk of high blood pressure.
The research team, led by a scientist from Keio University, conducted a study involving 4,554 individuals aged 20 to 70 and found that those who did not drink coffee had the highest incidence of hypertension. The incidence was lowest among those who consumed 3 or more cups of coffee daily.
“Drinking 1-2 cups of coffee a day is very beneficial for young people and those in middle age,” the Tokyo Shimbun quoted the scientists as saying.
Chlorogenic acid, a type of polyphenol found in coffee, is considered to have a vasodilatory effect. Another group of Japanese researchers also found that drinking one cup of coffee per day can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer in women by half.
However, the report also noted that coffee consumption could lead to cerebrovascular disorders in the elderly. Excessive caffeine intake may also cause acid buildup in the stomach.
Not long ago, a group of American researchers also published findings that drinking coffee does not raise blood pressure in women.
