The pine forests of Ben Hai Forest Enterprise in Quang Tri Province are currently facing a severe invasion of caterpillars.
It is estimated that the area affected by the caterpillars has reached over 1,000 hectares, accounting for more than 25% of the total forest area being exploited.
In compartments 548, 549, and 554, the density of caterpillars is extremely high, approximately 500-700 caterpillars per tree.
As a result, the forest enterprise has had to halt pine resin extraction in these areas and limit the spread of caterpillars using light traps.
With powerful light bulbs, on average, workers can trap 50 kg of adult caterpillars each night, with some nights seeing up to 100 kg trapped.
This method has significantly reduced the density and growth of caterpillars in the area.
