TileToy: A Fusion of Traditional Play and Modern Technology by Finnish Scientists
For decades, people have been familiar with the Rubik’s Cube and various intellectual games such as chess and word puzzles. Now, Finnish scientists Tuomo Tammenpaa and Daniel Blackburn have combined all these elements into a new toy inspired by modern LED touch screen technology.
Simple Structure
TileToy consists of square plastic blocks with a diameter of 10 cm, one side of which features a touch-sensitive LED screen. Inside each plastic block lies a special microprocessor that performs two functions: executing the player’s commands through the touch screen and interacting with a computer via wireless connectivity.
When players install a game software onto the block through a computer, it recognizes and operates according to the player’s intentions. In essence, players need to use multiple blocks connected through the LED screens. Therefore, the functionality of TileToy is incredibly diverse!
By combining the blocks, players can engage in activities ranging from simple word games or calculations to complex puzzles or various types of board games. The LED matrix system ensures the highest level of interactivity between the player and the toy.
Stimulating Creativity and Flexibility Not only is it strong in interactivity, but the greatest feature of TileToy is its flexibility. Players have complete freedom to create and develop their games without being restricted by any factors.
Moreover, the game designers have stated that once the game is completed, it will be an open project. Players are free to create and share their software installations for TileToy.
However, the initial focus of the product will be on educational games. After being developed beyond the lab, it will be tested in schools as an engaging and visually appealing educational tool for children.
There will be no need for a thick instruction manual, yet it will be rich in educational and creative value. TileToy is set to be the intellectual game of the future. It is suitable for players of all ages and boasts an aesthetic design that is simple yet beautiful. Together with Tuomo and Daniel, TileToy is receiving support from various experts to ensure its launch next year.
