Recently, a clip circulated on social media showing a cobra “standing upright” like a human, sparking widespread discussion.
The video, posted by Susanta Nanda, an employee of the Indian Forest Department, on February 27, has garnered over 360,000 views on Twitter within just a few days.
The clip depicts the cobra standing completely upright, as tall as a person, stretching its gaze into the distance from a mound of earth. Forest ranger Nanda stated, “King cobras can indeed ‘stand upright’, reaching the eye level of an adult. They can lift about one-third of their body off the ground to extend their line of sight.”
After its release, the clip attracted significant attention from the online community. Many netizens commented with a mix of astonishment and horror at the cobra’s “majestic” posture. One user wrote, “The king cobra can ‘stand upright’ as tall as a person, showcasing the danger of this species. It truly sends chills down my spine.”

It is known that the king cobra is one of the most venomous snakes in the world. They can grow to lengths of 3 to 4 meters and weigh around 9 kg. A single bite from a king cobra can release enough venom to kill 20 people.
Even in the “upright” position, the king cobra can still move. It will extend its body forward to attack its opponent. The ability to “stand upright” gives them an advantage as they appear larger compared to their adversaries.
