Starting from early 2006, the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) will widely implement the world’s next-generation telecommunications technology network, known as NGN.
The next-generation network (NGN) features the integration of various services over IP protocols, which helps reduce costs and simplify the management and operation of telecommunications activities. Instead of having multiple exchanges operating different types of services, there will be a single exchange managing all telecommunications services.
VNPT has been implementing NGN technology on its backbone network since 2003. According to the plan, starting from early 2006, VNPT will extend NGN to local exchanges and transmission systems, with a complete transition to NGN expected between 2008 and 2010.
Initial calculations by VNPT indicate that while the upfront costs are relatively high, the shift to an NGN will significantly reduce operational and maintenance costs. Furthermore, it will help align Vietnam’s telecommunications infrastructure with the future development of global telecommunications technology.
Vietnam is currently one of the few countries in the region that has deployed this new technology network.
