On November 28 and 29, Dr. Michel Henry, a leading expert in carotid artery interventions from France, collaborated with interventional cardiologists at Chợ Rẫy Hospital to perform stent placements for 12 patients. This procedure included 10 cases of peripheral artery dilation and two cases of carotid artery dilation. These are the first carotid artery stent placements in the southern region of Vietnam.
In the coming time, Chợ Rẫy Hospital will continue to implement this technique. According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Võ Thành Nhân, head of the interventional cardiology department, atherosclerosis on the carotid artery walls poses a risk of cerebrovascular accidents. Previously, treatment in Vietnam primarily focused on medication, with surgery being rare. Preventive carotid artery stenting can reduce the risk of stroke by two-thirds.
For older adults (men over 45 and women over 55) experiencing symptoms such as lightheadedness, dizziness, transient blindness, weakness on one side of the body, or facial drooping that subsequently resolves (transient ischemic attack), carotid artery ultrasound is necessary for guidance and preventive treatment recommendations.
