To enhance the security measures for its users, AOL has recently launched a security application named Safety and Security Center, designed to address vulnerabilities in Windows with antivirus, spyware protection, and a firewall. The internet is becoming increasingly dangerous with a surge in viruses, worms, and malware, placing users at high security risks. AOL has partnered with McAfee to provide virus scanning tools and a firewall, designed to protect both dial-up and broadband users. AOL Spyware Protection 2.0 utilizes Computer Associates’ PestPatrol technology to remove 28,000 types of spyware and other malicious programs.
Utilizing features similar to AOL Explorer and Netscape, the Safety and Security Center includes phishing protection and prevents access to suspicious websites. AOL continues to collaborate with several partners to maintain an updated list of URLs identified as phishing and also selectively filters notifications of suspicious activities from users.
The Parental Controls manager is also integrated, allowing parents to restrict their children’s access to specified websites. Parents can set internet usage times and monitor their children’s web activity through AOL Guardian.
Similar to Microsoft’s integration of the Security Center in Windows Service Pack 2, the AOL Safety and Security Center encompasses unique features that display information about AOL software on users’ computers. This management center will show the status of spyware protection as well as manage pop-ups.
Although AOL Safety and Security Center is a standalone application, it is only available to users subscribed to AOL services. AOL users on version 8.0 or higher can download it for free here. Current settings for Parental Controls and security will be imported from the AOL client into the Safety and Security Center, according to AOL.
