Researchers from the University of Hertfordshire have discovered a new type of elastic plastic that is both hard and soft. Known as d3o, this material is particularly useful in injury prevention.

Under normal conditions, the molecules of d3o move slowly, making the material very flexible. However, when compressed by an impact, its molecules lock tightly together. As a result, the material hardens, distributing the force over a larger area.
Recognizing this benefit, the Swiss company Ribcap is using d3o to produce a type of headgear for snow sports. Typically, the helmet is soft and flexible when worn. However, in the event of a strong impact to the head, such as a fall, the helmet hardens like a traditional helmet.
Named Ribcap, this helmet is the result of five years of research and development. According to Ruth Gough, the brand director, Ribcap provides comfort and ease for the wearer, making it easy to forget that they are wearing a helmet. In addition to producing headgear, Ribcap also utilizes d3o material to create knee pads, elbow pads, shoulder pads, and hip pads.
