Mobility challenges are one of the significant issues faced by the elderly. To assist them in maintaining independence and confidence while moving around, the Japanese startup Whill has launched the Model R scooter.
With its compact and flexible design, replaceable battery, and the ability to charge in small apartments, the Model R is the perfect companion for short trips.

Equipped with four small wheels, this scooter features a replaceable battery and can navigate various terrains, running on sidewalks and in places like airports and hospitals at speeds of up to 6 km/h.
Another advantage of the Model R is that it can turn around within a minimum radius of 97 cm, making it easier for operators to maneuver in narrow streets and crowded areas.
The scooter’s battery can cover a distance of 17.2 km and takes 5 hours to fully charge.
The price of the scooter is 357,000 yen (approximately 2,400 USD) for the white model and 372,000 yen for the color-coated version.
Additionally, Whill offers a rental service for this advanced scooter model.
Two months ago, Whill launched this model in the United Kingdom and the United States, with plans to sell the product in Canada and Europe while also considering the Asian market. About 60% of the company’s revenue comes from North America, and 25% from Japan.
According to Whill, it is estimated that 12 million people in Japan face difficulties walking more than 500 meters. Japan is also the country with the oldest population in the world, with over 29% of its population aged 65 and older (as of 2023).
