On December 6th, Microsoft began the rollout of the upgraded version of Windows Server 2003 R2 to manufacturers, with consumer availability expected within the next two months.
Windows Server 2003 R2 is the next upgrade of the Windows Server 2003 platform and is designed to be 100% compatible with applications currently running on the existing infrastructure. Microsoft first showcased the initial preview of Windows Server 2003 R2 in August 2005 and followed up with a second preview in October.
Virtualization is the key feature in the Windows Server 2003 R2 upgrade, designed to operate in tandem and integrate seamlessly with other applications such as Virtual Server 2005, Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), and Systems Management Server (SMS).
Windows Server 2003 R2 promises improved management capabilities and enhanced communication with Unix systems through the integration of Unix subsystem within the Windows environment.
The Windows Server 2003 R2 upgrade will be available in two different versions, each with its own pricing. The Web edition will be priced at approximately $399, while the Enterprise edition will be available for $3,999.
