Islamic scholars believe that pigs are unclean animals, and a part of a person’s character will be negatively affected by consuming pork products.
Among the major cultures of the world, Islamic culture is known for its prohibition against the consumption of pork by its followers. This stems from passages in the Quran that regard pigs as impure animals.
Islamic culture is known for its prohibition against the consumption of pork.
Here are some excerpts from the Quran on this issue:
“Allah has only prohibited you from dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah” (Al Baqara 2:173).
“Say: In what has been revealed to me, I do not see anything prohibited to one who would eat it, except that it be dead or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine, for indeed, it is impure; or that which is a transgression, other than Allah” (Al-‘An`ām 6:145).
“Translation: And the flesh of swine, for it is impure, and it is not permissible to eat its flesh or touch its carcass” (Deuteronomy 14:8).
In modern times, Islamic scholars continue to reinforce the prohibition against pork consumption with scientific evidence, citing that pork is responsible for more than 70 different diseases, the most common of which are various types of intestinal worms.
According to them, pigs are “more unclean” than other livestock because their digestive systems operate much faster compared to other animals (taking only 4 hours to digest, while cows take up to 24 hours). As a result, the process of toxin excretion is shorter and less effective. Additionally, pigs lack sweat glands, which allows pathogens to be stored and develop in their fat, blood, and meat.

The final reason pertains to the sexual instincts of pigs. Among livestock, they are the only animals that tend to engage in promiscuous mating as an inherent trait. From a moral standpoint, this behavior is deemed unacceptable in Islam.
