Following a series of websites such as hvaonline.net, ddth.com, chodientu.com, trananh.com, maihoang.com… being hit by DDoS attacks, yesterday at 6 PM (December 12), the website of the Computer Rescue and Cybersecurity Center 911 in Hanoi also fell victim to an overwhelming flood of traffic.
911.com.vn is a website specialized in computer troubleshooting and cybersecurity, providing information on how to eliminate various new viruses along with convenient computer tips. However, yesterday afternoon, the management board of the center issued a notice stating, “Currently, 911.com.vn is under a denial-of-service attack from hackers, so please temporarily visit the backup address at namsao.homeftp.net to view. Please remember to pause posting questions.”
“We had received warnings about the impending attacks from hackers beforehand. But there is really no way to cope with a denial-of-service attack“, said Mr. Nguyễn Hùng Cường, Director of Center 911. “This type of attack causes significant damage to our unit, as up to 30% of our customers transact through the website daily“. The 911 site currently experiences around 20,000 to 30,000 visits each day. The center’s temporary solution is to transfer the domain to a different server for temporary operation.
By around 9 AM this morning, the website was back up and running normally, but it remains uncertain how long this will last before the hackers launch a new round of attacks. Director Nguyễn Hùng Cường stated that the management team at 911 is investigating the source of the attack and seeking the earliest possible resolution.
At the end of this year, denial-of-service attacks are occurring everywhere, targeting websites across all types of services, from e-commerce sites to IT forums and hacker forums. While the victims are helplessly raising their concerns, it seems that no regulatory agency has spoken out, while those in the shadows continue to orchestrate these raids for their own glory.
In an interview with VnExpress, Nguyễn Tử Quảng, Director of the Cybersecurity Center at Hanoi University of Science and Technology – BKIS, revealed that his agency’s website was also attacked recently. The mastermind behind the attack was identified as having targeted bkav.com.vn to showcase their computing prowess. “The high frequency of denial-of-service attacks significantly impacts many organizations and businesses today, which is indeed alarming“, said Mr. Quảng. “In the near future, we will closely monitor the situation and provide statistics and assessments on this issue“.
