The Alexa Web Search Platform Beta essentially allows developers to delve into the company’s catalog of 4 billion web pages to select data and create their own search tools.
The decision to expand the infrastructure of Amazon.com’s Alexa website evaluation system will enable individuals to build affordable search tools. Developers will have the opportunity to accelerate the development of search applications using Alexa’s detection, storage, and processing technology. Fees will be charged based on the level of usage for storage and bandwidth.
“Many entrepreneurs find themselves at a loss due to a lack of information and an accurate evaluation tool. Now, for less than the cost of an iPod, they can access the entire search realm and start customizing it as they wish,” affirmed Geoffrey Mack, Production Director of Alexa.
This idea has been tested by several companies since 2000 but has not succeeded. Those programs failed during the dot-com crisis, a time when the deep search market and search advertising services had not yet emerged.
According to Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch (USA), there are currently some providers offering services similar to Alexa for free, such as Rollyo and Gigablast.
