The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) recently concluded Phase I of the Biogas Support Program for Vietnam’s livestock sector, funded by the Dutch government with a total amount of 2 million USD.
Launched in February 2003 across 12 provinces and cities, including Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hoa Binh, Nghe An, Thua Thien Hue, Binh Dinh, Dak Lak, Dong Nai, and Tien Giang, the project has successfully constructed 18,000 biogas facilities. Currently, all facilities are operating well, providing gas for the daily needs of residents, saving on fuel costs, and simultaneously reducing environmental pollution in livestock development areas.
In addition to providing financial support for the construction of these facilities, the project has also engaged in training and enhancing knowledge about biogas for technicians, builders, and users of the facilities. Furthermore, it has bolstered the capacity of agricultural extension staff at all levels to promote biogas technology among farmers, thereby supporting livestock development in conjunction with sustainable environmental protection.
Based on the results of Phase I, the Dutch government has agreed to continue its support for Phase II of the project, which is expected to be implemented from 2006 to 2011 with a total investment of 64.4 million euros. The goal is to construct 180,000 biogas facilities across 58 provinces and cities nationwide.
