After many years of hard work, Stephen Hawking’s masterpiece was completed. In this book, he presents rigorous arguments and scientific predictions regarding the formation and future of the universe, titled “A Brief History of Time”.
“A Brief History of Time”, published in 1988, caused a global sensation, with people rushing to buy it. Many readers were fascinated by its content, and the book has been translated into over 30 languages, circulating worldwide.
Due to his significant contributions, the Royal Society of London elected him as a member. During the ceremony, Hawking, sitting in his wheelchair, signed his name in the society’s golden book, the first page of which featured the name of the great scientist Isaac Newton.
Hawking’s scientific discoveries sent shockwaves through the Vatican. The Vatican is the highest authority of the Church. Over 300 years ago, this same institution had banned the research of Galileo, condemning the scientist who steadfastly upheld the truth for life. However, today, the Vatican has shown signs of wisdom.
One day, Hawking suddenly received a letter from the Vatican, and after reading it, he exclaimed with joy: “I can hardly believe it, this is truly remarkable.” The letter informed him that the Vatican was preparing to award him a medal recognizing him as a “young scientist with outstanding achievements.” Hawking thought: Perhaps the Vatican feels remorse for its actions over 300 years ago.
He smiled and told his wife: “Perhaps I will restore justice for Galileo!“
Hawking flew to the Vatican, thinking: “If we had more geniuses like Galileo, humanity could unveil the mysteries of the universe.”
He continued to ponder: “Although the Vatican’s attitude has changed significantly, it would be beneficial for all humanity if they could reach a conclusion regarding the case from 300 years ago.”
The Vatican held a grand award ceremony, with an incredibly lively atmosphere. Many young scientists from around the world took turns to receive awards presented by the Pope.
Hawking sat still in his wheelchair as the Pope personally came down to drape the shining medal around his neck, and the applause echoed like thunder. After the ceremony, the Pope met with the scientists. While conversing, Hawking smiled and said to the Pope: “Your Holiness, we are deeply moved by your support for science and the prize from you and the Vatican. However, historically, there was a period when the Vatican’s stance towards science was not very favorable. May I be so bold as to ask for your forgiveness for my bluntness?”
The Pope smiled and replied: “You may speak freely!” Hawking continued: “I believe that if the Pope were to issue a declaration correcting the erroneous judgments made in history, it would greatly benefit both the Vatican and the scientific community. What are your thoughts on this, Your Holiness?“
The Pope responded: “I suspect you are referring to the case of Galileo, correct?”
Hawking replied: “Yes, indeed.”
The Pope said: “Regarding this matter, we have plans and will make appropriate statements when the time is right.”
Hawking expressed his joy: “If that happens, the entire congregation and the scientific community will be thrilled.”
Not long after, the Vatican released a statement on this issue. The announcement clearly stated: “Over 300 years ago, the Vatican’s judgment regarding Galileo was a mistake; Galileo’s scientific discoveries are accurate.”
“Sickness is frightening, but more frightening is the disappointment and despair in people’s hearts.“
