After nearly a year of delays, Sun has announced software that enables the Solaris operating system to run Linux applications without modification.
The BrandZ software (formerly known as Project Janus) was released to the OpenSolaris community last week, allowing it to run operating systems such as FreeBSD or Apple’s open-source Darwin project.
Project Janus was derived from the Solaris 10 version released earlier this year when Sun engineers realized it would be better to redesign the software to interact with the company’s new virtualization technology – Solaris Zones.
Sun hopes to extend BrandZ support to other Linux distributors such as Red Hat and Novell.
