A dashcam video from a car has captured a strange incident in China: Manhole covers on the road suddenly popped up simultaneously, creating a cloud of dust and causing panic among drivers. What could cause such a phenomenon?
The dashcam video from a car recorded this puzzling—and frightening—event on the road in Anshan City (also known as Yenshan), located in Liaoning Province, China.
Here is the video:
It seems that an explosion (or multiple explosions) occurred, though it is unclear where, causing many manhole covers to fly up several meters into the air, leaving open holes in the road, which is very dangerous. Some areas of the road surface were also cracked.
Emergency services responded quickly, and local authorities were on the scene to assess the situation and begin repairs.
The local authorities have issued a statement confirming the incident.
While the exact cause has yet to be determined, experts suggest that prolonged extreme heat may have triggered a strong reaction involving methane gas in the sewer system. Some officials also suspect that a natural gas pipeline underground may have leaked, causing the explosions. However, all of these remain hypotheses that have not been confirmed. Some online commentators speculate that human factors may have contributed to this mysterious explosion.

Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident, but it is still considered a serious accident due to its sudden occurrence, posing unexpected dangers to passersby.
Investigations are currently ongoing.
