Each walk lasts about 30 minutes |
The Emperor penguins at Asahiyama Zoo on Hokkaido Island, northern Japan, are starting a special exercise routine to prevent fat accumulation during the winter.
Every day, they must walk twice at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM, covering 500 meters each time for about 30 minutes to avoid becoming too sluggish.
Tetsuo Yamazaki, the zoo spokesperson, stated that the penguins become heavy during the winter because they tend to stand still to conserve energy. This training program runs from December until the beginning of spring.
“Like humans, penguins also accumulate fat during the winter months, and their blood sugar levels increase,” Yamazaki said. He also mentioned that penguins can only walk during snowy months, as their feet are not suited for walking on other surfaces.
