The Quang Tri Provincial Forestry Department reported that during a biodiversity survey in the forest area of the Dakrong Nature Reserve, researchers discovered a rare plant species listed in both the Vietnam and global Red Data Books, known as the golden-thread orchid.
The golden-thread orchid thrives on limestone slopes, displaying purple stems and leaves, with each leaf featuring 3 to 5 vertical stripes. This orchid is utilized in pharmaceutical technology, leading to a high market demand with prices exceeding 120,000 VND per kilogram. Currently, the harvesting of this species is prohibited.
Additionally, during the survey, wildlife conservation officers recorded the presence of 14 out of 23 species of Vietnamese pheasants for the first time in the Dakrong Reserve area.
These rare pheasant species include the black-backed pheasant, Japanese quail, white-throated pheasant, red-necked pheasant, central pheasant, white pheasant, black-crowned pheasant, white-crested pheasant, purple-banded pheasant, golden pheasant, red pheasant, starling pheasant, peacock, and wild chicken. Among these, two species are endemic, found only in the forests of Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue, namely the black-crowned pheasant and the white-crested pheasant.
