On November 23, Professor Dr. Truong Viet Dung, Head of the Department of Science and Training at the Ministry of Health, announced that on December 25, a task force from the Ministry will visit Nghi Xuan District, Ha Tinh to assess the situation in detail. So far, this condition has been identified as Delta muscle atrophy.
A team of doctors from the Orthopedic Department of the Central Pediatrics Hospital is currently performing surgeries for cases of Delta muscle atrophy. According to initial assessments, these cases only require fibrous tissue separation for normal muscle development. It is confirmed that the cause is not related to vaccination programs, as if it were due to vaccinations, only one age group would be affected. However, the disease has been observed across various age groups, including older individuals.
Professor Dr. Truong Viet Dung stated that if the cause is due to natural environmental factors, it would be very challenging. It is not feasible to relocate residents from this area. Regardless of the cause, the Ministry of Health will collaborate with relevant departments to investigate and provide a final conclusion soon to reassure the public.
Recently, there has been widespread shock when it was reported that the entire Nghi Xuan District has approximately 600 children suffering from Delta muscle atrophy, with the cause of the disease still unknown. This condition leads to physical deformities in the children, affecting their limbs, shoulders, and muscle development compared to normal individuals.
Currently, there are 320 severely affected children in the district, who are older, experiencing declining health, and facing deformities that lead to feelings of inferiority among their peers, negatively impacting their educational pursuits. Some children are at risk of dropping out of school. This situation has adversely affected the future of an entire generation of youth in this region.
