If you rush to bed immediately after dinner, you are at a high risk of developing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), commonly known as acid reflux. It is best to wait at least 3 hours after a meal before going to sleep.
According to Dr. Yasuhiro Fujiwara from Osaka City University (Japan), individuals who go to bed within 3 hours after eating are 7.45 times more likely to experience acid reflux compared to those who wait at least 4 hours.
Fujiwara and his team studied the duration between dinner and bedtime in 147 GERD patients and over 200 individuals without symptoms of acid reflux over the course of a year. The results indicated that sleeping immediately after eating significantly increases the risk of GERD. Based on this survey, Fujiwara’s group plans to investigate whether fasting for at least 3 hours before bedtime can reduce or improve symptoms of acid reflux.
