The U.S. Department of Health is considering allowing oral HIV testing to be conducted at home. However, the government needs to study the psychological effects in cases where individuals learn of a positive result while being the only person present at the time of diagnosis.
This is a rapid test kit called OraQuick, developed by OraSure Technologies. Users only need to place a sample in their mouth for analysis from oral cells. Then, they insert a test stick into a small testing container. Results will appear within 20 minutes.
Currently, this diagnostic method for the virus is being used in clinics and hospitals across the United States. Health authorities are considering allowing OraQuick to be sold over the counter at pharmacies. However, there are many concerns that home testing could have negative psychological impacts on patients.
