Starz Entertainment Group officially launched its movie download service with a new application called Vongo (www.vongo.com). This service allows users to play media files on Windows computers, laptops, and various portable devices, including televisions.
The service provides unlimited access to 1,000 movies and videos, as well as the ability to stream video from the Starz channel for one month. Each account can download content on up to three devices for a subscription fee of $9.99 per month. Some movies also offer a pay-per-view option at $3.99 for each download.
The digital channel also announced partnerships with its newest members, Sony and Microsoft, to expand its network. Sony may use Vongo as part of the upcoming Sony Connect Video, while Microsoft will provide technical support to Starz in various aspects of this service.
Starz aims to add television shows to the service, but is awaiting customer feedback from this movie download platform. Currently, titles available include “Hitch,” “Kill Bill Vol. 2,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Good Will Hunting,” and “Dances With Wolves.”
Starz stated that it will promote the service widely to users at CES 2006 through its partners Microsoft and Sony.
