Reflecting on the past year with the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), we can identify numerous significant events. Here, we summarize the most notable highlights from the previous year.
1. Government Approval of the Pilot Scheme for the Formation of the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group. Accordingly, VNPT will become a state-owned economic group engaged in various industries both domestically and internationally, with telecommunications, information technology, and postal services as its core business sectors. VNPT continues to enhance its organizational management and production activities, aiming to finalize its structure for the Group’s launch by mid-2006. This is the first enterprise approved by the government to become a state-owned economic group.
2. The Year 2005 Marks 60 Years of Development of the Postal Industry (August 15, 1945 – August 15, 2005). VNPT organized a variety of vibrant activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the industry, including a comprehensive review of the 20 years of reform, successfully hosting the 2nd Emulation Congress of the Group, and marking the 10th anniversary of VNPT’s operation under the State’s 91st model.
3. VNPT Fully Achieved All Key Targets for the 2005 Plan: Successfully developed telephone services to 100% of communes as stipulated in the 9th Congress resolution; revenue exceeded 33 trillion VND; contributed 5 trillion VND to the state budget; added over 3.25 million new telephone lines and nearly 200,000 new Internet subscriptions, bringing the total number of telephone subscriptions across the network to over 13 million. These achievements were crucial in fulfilling the integration and development plan for the period 2001-2005, with an average growth rate of 14% per year and total contributions to the state budget reaching 26 trillion VND.
4. Maintaining a Leading Role in the Telecommunications and IT Sector. The network has been significantly invested in, expanded, and modernized to meet communication needs and economic development, serving political security, social order, disaster prevention, and mitigation; actively supporting new enterprises in their growth.
5. VNPT Launched Next Generation Telecommunications Network (NGN) Nationwide, demonstrating the convergence of telecommunications, IT, and media technologies. This is a prerequisite for VNPT to continue being a pioneer in the telecommunications and IT sectors. VNPT has robustly developed content services such as prepaid card phone service 1719, free calls for the recipient at 1800, entertainment information at 1900, MEGA WAN, MAN services, etc., to meet the increasing and diverse demands of society; seven of VNPT’s software products and solutions received the IT and Communications Cup (ITC Cup 2005).
6. VNPT Approved by the Government to Charge Mobile Information Services Using a 30 + 6 Block Rate. Along with implementing the largest rate reductions ever, this has sparked vibrant growth in the mobile information market and garnered widespread public support.
7. The Prime Minister Assigned VNPT to Implement the Vietnam Telecommunications Satellite Project (VINASAT) according to Decision No. 1104/QĐ-TTg dated October 18, 2005. The plan aims to launch the VINASAT satellite into operation in the second quarter of 2008 at the registered geostationary orbit position of 1320E.
8. Expansion and Strengthening of International Cooperation Relations. Many multilateral and bilateral meetings have led to cooperation agreements and commitments being signed. VNPT has successfully participated in and organized numerous major conferences, exhibitions, and seminars both domestically and internationally, such as TELMIN, GMS, Vietnam EXPO 2005, ComputerWorld Expo 2005, IT Week 2005, COMNET Vietnam 2005, etc. These activities have opened new cooperation channels and reaffirmed VNPT’s position as a reliable partner for domestic and international clients.
9. For the First Time, the Image of All 54 Ethnic Groups of Vietnam Was Vibrantly Featured on a Postal Stamp titled “The Community of Ethnic Groups in Vietnam“. This is the most elaborate and extensive stamp series designed to date. In the same year, VNPT also issued several stamps of significant value, such as “60th Anniversary of the August Revolution” and “Thang Long – Hanoi’s Traditional Resistance Against Foreign Invasion,” among others. The government decided to expand the business functions and tasks of the Postal Savings Company (VPSC) to include banking services. Accordingly, VPSC is permitted to provide payment instruments, collection and disbursement services, and other financial agency services. This event further affirms VNPT’s prestige and opens a new developmental phase in its postal sector.

The Successful 21st Party Congress of the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) set significant development targets for VNPT during the 2005-2010 period, including an average revenue growth rate of 10% per year; a telephone density of 29 lines per 100 people by 2010; and a basic investment of 35 trillion VND to modernize the network over five years…
