The Ancient Origins reported that a chance discovery occurred in Wiveliscombe, Somerset, England, which is being regarded as a significant archaeological treasure. The garden’s owner, Mr. Charles Pole, a retired banker, intended to build a wooden house to enjoy his retirement and sell the main house. However, from the very first digs, the workers uncovered ancient walls.

Archaeologist Bob Croft from South West Heritage Trust, the agency overseeing the site, noted that the bishop’s palace is a surprising and valuable find. Previously, there was knowledge of a large palace known as Wiveliscombe, once the residence of many famous bishops, buried somewhere in the area. However, years passed without anyone finding it. Recently, the search had been misdirected as people believed that the residence was located further east, where a warehouse and a large courtyard currently stand.
According to BBC, the bishop’s palace will be among the residences of the Bishops of Bath and Wells. Some documents indicate that two bishops undertook significant construction work in
Wiveliscombe between 1309 and 1363.
According to historical records, the palace fell into ruins and was abandoned in the early 18th century. (Photo: South West Heritage Trust).
The ongoing excavation in the garden has revealed stone foundations, a relatively sturdy wall, and a fireplace. Historical records indicate that the palace had fallen into ruins and was abandoned since the early 18th century, later buried under more modern structures. It was not until later that the archaeological and historical value of the building was recognized, leading to its rediscovery.
According to The Mirror, the garden’s owner expressed that he is “happy but uncomfortable” with this discovery. He is currently disabled due to age-related illnesses and lives alone in a nearby house. While he is pleased to learn that his garden conceals many valuable items, this also means he will have to indefinitely postpone his plans to build a wooden house and sell his current home, incurring significant financial loss at the age of 81.
