According to a survey conducted by the British charity organization DPP, among 1,000 respondents, 270 men and 230 women reported smoking in such stressful situations; one in three participants indicated that issues related to information technology (IT) were a primary cause of their nervous strain.
The survey identified the top three causes of nervous strain, including IT-related issues at 30%; changes in financial status or personal trauma at 24%; and commuting issues at 20%.
Additionally, the death of a family member or divorce are also leading causes of nervous strain.
DPP recommends discussing your stresses with others as this is an essential way to alleviate them. It is advisable to lead a healthy lifestyle, avoid taking on too many responsibilities, and identify what specifically causes mental overload in order to find remedies.
Avoid unnecessary conflicts and arguments, and arrange your work and relaxation time sensibly. Besides taking time to unwind and visiting friends, it is crucial to refrain from using alcohol, cigarettes, or any substances to cope with nervous strain.
