A recent study indicates a connection between diuretics and decreased levels of sodium and potassium—two essential electrolytes. Low electrolyte levels can lead to low blood pressure and arrhythmias.
As a result, doctors in the United Kingdom are now advised to monitor patients with hypertension who are prescribed diuretics.
Professor Ian Hall, co-author of the report, stated that individuals using Thiazide, a type of diuretic, at high doses are at risk of developing low sodium levels.
Low sodium levels can result in low blood pressure, dizziness, and falls in the elderly. Meanwhile, low potassium levels can cause heart rhythm disorders.
Only 32% of patients with hypertension and cardiovascular issues have had their sodium and potassium levels tested. Professor Ian Hall recommends that individuals taking these medications should have a blood test annually to monitor their electrolyte levels.
