Microsoft has just introduced a new option for businesses and users to update security patches all at once without the need for Windows Update or WSUS (Microsoft Windows Server Update Services), opting instead for CD distribution.
Microsoft will provide all high-risk security patches or updates for Windows each month in the form of a CD image file (ISO). “This will not significantly impact end-users as it will not automatically detect the current version being used,” explained Craig Gehre from the Microsoft Security Response Center. “However, it will be truly beneficial for users who frequently download and manage multiple updates. For example, the security flaw MS06-002 has up to 125 separate packages for all languages and versions.”
Users will need to use third-party software to burn the image file (ISO-9660) onto a CD. Information regarding the compilation of security patches and updates can be viewed here.
Microsoft has also released the first CD image file for January 2006, which compiles two security flaws: KB912919 (MS06-001) and KB908519 (MS06-002). With a size of 98.7MB, users can download it completely free of charge here.
