Dogs Can Detect Cancer Through Breath, New Study Reveals
Recent research suggests that dogs can detect whether a person has cancer simply by sniffing their breath.
With just a few weeks of basic training, ordinary house dogs can identify both early-stage lung and breast cancers through the breath of patients.
The study was conducted by the Pine Street Foundation, a cancer research organization based in San Anselmo, California, and was published in a specialized journal.
Michael McCulloch, the lead researcher, stated that their study provides “evidence that cancers hidden within the skin can be detected simply by testing a patient’s breath with the help of dogs.”
Patients with lung and breast cancer are believed to emit specific biochemical compounds related to their illnesses in their breath.
There is hope that dogs, known as humans’ best friends, will become an important tool in monitoring and early detection of cancer, which could significantly improve patients’ chances of recovery.
