The Prime Minister of Vietnam has recently approved a program for the development and application of biotechnology in agriculture and rural development until 2020, with a total investment of approximately 1 trillion VND during the period from 2006 to 2015.
This funding is allocated for research and development activities, pilot production of key products on an industrial scale, and training of human resources.
In the period from 2006 to 2010, the program aims to train 60-80 new PhD holders, 200-250 master’s graduates, and 500-1,000 agricultural biotechnology technicians.
The program also sets the goal that by 2020, the area planted with new crop varieties created by biotechnology will account for over 70%, with genetically modified crops making up 30-50% of that area.

100 Billion VND for Environmental Protection Activities
In 2006, the Vietnam Environmental Protection Fund under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment plans to allocate 100 billion VND to invest in environmental projects such as solid waste treatment, industrial wastewater management, pollution in craft villages, clean production, and the socialization of environmental protection efforts.
Nguyen Nam Phuong, Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Fund, stated that after two years of operation, the Fund has collaborated with relevant agencies to evaluate, assess, and establish databases, as well as to develop environmental protection plans at numerous industrial production facilities and craft villages locally.
To diversify its funding sources, the Environmental Protection Fund is promoting cooperation with international organizations such as the World Bank (WB), the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Denmark, and Switzerland, in order to enhance environmental protection activities in Vietnam.
