The Bàu Sấu Wetland System (Cát Tiên National Park) is internationally recognized as the 1499th site in the Ramsar list and is the second Ramsar site in Vietnam. |
According to conservation organizations, Vietnam currently has 68 inland and coastal wetland areas, covering more than 10 million hectares, which are significant for national and global biodiversity and environmental value.
The report titled “An Overview of the Status of Wetlands in Vietnam After 15 Years of Implementing the Ramsar Convention on the Conservation and Sustainable Development of Wetlands“, published by the Department of Environmental Protection on January 16 in Hanoi, indicates that wetlands in Vietnam are diverse in types, rich in resources, and abundant in biodiversity, providing various functions along with economic, social, and cultural values.
These wetland areas play a crucial role in socio-economic development, poverty alleviation, and disaster risk reduction.
The list of wetland areas presented in the report has attracted significant investment interest from the international community to support Vietnam in the reasonable use and sustainable development of natural resources in wetland areas.
The report, conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection with support from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Mekong Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use Programme (MWBP), and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), also proposes future wetland management solutions.
According to the Department of Environmental Protection, since 2006, Vietnam has prioritized establishing legal frameworks and mapping national wetlands in its conservation and development activities.
Trần Hồng Hà, Director of the Department of Environmental Protection, affirmed that the report is a useful resource for managers, policymakers, organizations, and individuals to develop action plans for the protection and development of wetland areas from the central to local levels.
