One of 27 new species discovered underground, a blind silverfish |
Many newly discovered animal species have unusual body structures found in damp, dark caves…
These caves are located beneath two national parks in the Sierra Nevada, USA.
According to Joel Despain, a cave expert, these animals are not only completely new to science, but they have also adapted to their specific environments.
The new discoveries include a translucent isopod so clear that its internal organs are visible, particularly a long, pale yellow liver.
Additionally, researchers found long-legged creatures with jaws larger than their bodies, and a tiny orange spider that has the ability to glow.
While discovering a new mammal or bird species is extremely rare, caves still hold many secrets. Like the deep sea, studying them is challenging and new phenomena are seldom uncovered.
Biologists do not yet know how long these new species can live, which habitats are most suitable for them, how many offspring they produce per brood, or how sensitive they are to human activities.
According to biologists, the simultaneous discovery of many new species is incredibly exciting. These new species do not yet have names. They have only been scientifically described and categorized within the living organisms’ realm.
