The United States space agency (NASA) successfully launched the New Horizons probe to Pluto, the only planet in the Solar System that has yet to be explored.
New Horizons was launched at 19:00 (UTC) using an Atlas V rocket, embarking on a 10-day journey to Pluto, which is located 5 billion kilometers from Earth.
This $700 million probe will gather information about Pluto and its moons. Scientists hope that this data will aid in the exploration of other objects beyond the Solar System as well as enhance our understanding of the formation of the Solar System.
So far, Pluto remains the only planet that has not been explored by a spacecraft.
The launch of New Horizons was delayed twice over two consecutive days due to bad weather and technical difficulties.
