This technological innovation has yielded positive results from an experimental project conducted on a stretch of road in the western region of Uttar Pradesh, northern India.
Experts from the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, developed bio-asphalt used to construct a 650-meter stretch of national highway connecting Muzaffarnagar and Shamli.
This type of bio-asphalt allows for up to 30% of molasses to replace traditional asphalt binder without compromising strength or durability.
The road, constructed in November 2022, has recently been evaluated and has shown promising results after enduring monsoon rains.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Public Works Department in Uttar Pradesh have acknowledged the successful trial on this new road.
The ministry is now planning to research and identify more areas where this technology can be further tested before a broader replacement for asphalt is implemented.
