After several incidents of hackers creating identical sites to that of the world’s largest search engine to spread viruses and ads, Websense (USA) has issued a warning about an online scam involving Google.
Victims receive an email directing them to a website that resembles Google’s homepage. Here, they are informed that they have “won” $400 and are prompted to enter their credit card number, billing address, and other personal information.
Ross Paul, the Production Director of Websense EMEA, stated: “It is hard to believe that some people still think they are lucky when they receive money. Scammers may only get lucky a few times, but the reputation of Google makes this phishing attempt seem more ‘genuine’ because people are aware of the company’s high revenue.”
The fake website is hosted in the United States, and Websense has indicated that they have not yet estimated the number of victims caught in this trap.
