The management board of U Minh Thuong National Park in Kien Giang Province has announced the discovery of a rare orchid species in this area.
According to Dr. Thai Thanh Luom, the director of U Minh Thuong National Park, this orchid appears similar to the Cibidium orchid found in the Bao Loc region (Lam Dong), but its leaves are shorter and thinner, and the flower buds grow straight like the Tieu Binh orchid.
Notably, the structure of the flower is almost different from any previously discovered orchids, yet it closely resembles the imported rabbit ear orchid. The lifespan of the flowers is around 30 days, with a flowering cycle that coincides with the Lunar New Year.
In Kien Giang, collectors have discovered approximately 20 species of orchids and terrestrial orchids, including several rare species such as Tieu Binh, Ngoc Dien, and Giang Huong. These have been found in Phu Quoc National Park, Hon Tre Island, Lai Son (in Kien Hai district), and in Ha Tien town (bordering Cambodia).
