Hue City has painted part of the sidewalks on several streets in the An Van Duong new urban area green for cyclists, becoming the first city in Vietnam to implement this concept.
After completing the investment in upgrading and renovating the roads of Vo Nguyen Giap and To Huu, as well as the internal paths of the provincial administrative center park (part of the green urban projects), the management board of the green urban project in Thua Thien Hue province has proceeded to paint part of the sidewalks on these streets to create space for cyclists.
Depending on the width of each sidewalk section, the investor will paint one or two bike lanes. These lanes are marked in green with yellow borders and are located inside the sidewalk.

Mr. Le Thanh Bac, Deputy Director of the Green Urban Project Management Board in Thua Thien Hue province, stated that they have painted bike lanes on the sidewalks of several main streets in Hue City, primarily focusing on the An Van Duong new urban area, with a total length of nearly 8 kilometers.
Hue City has become the first city in Vietnam to allocate part of the sidewalk for bicycle lanes.
According to reports from reporters, during the mornings and evenings, many residents of Hue City walk and cycle along these streets.
“Riding on these wide, spacious sidewalks with their green colors provides me with a very relaxing feeling,” shared a morning exerciser on To Huu street.
“Today, I had to go to the Department of Education and Training to pick up some items, and while passing by here, I noticed the soft, refreshing green paint, which is not too large compared to the sidewalk,” shared Ms. Duong Tra My (from Hue) on her personal page.

According to the leadership of the Green Urban Project Management Board in Thua Thien Hue, allocating part of the sidewalk for bicycles aims to realize the province’s commitment to transform Thua Thien Hue into a green, environmentally friendly city.
It is known that in recent years, Thua Thien Hue province has focused many resources on developing green transportation, improving the environment, and ensuring that residents and visitors can travel safely, comfortably, and conveniently by bicycle.
In addition to planning to develop a public passenger transportation system, Hue will promote bicycle transportation as a green and safe mode of transport, suitable for heritage preservation and landscape protection, with the aim of making Hue one of the first bicycle-friendly cities in Vietnam.
Hue is outlining different types for the bicycle network, such as: dedicated bike lanes, shared bike paths; scenic bike paths, priority roads for bicycles and pedestrians; and bicycle highways.
Thua Thien Hue will separate and create priority lanes for bicycles on main roads, implement various solutions to improve traffic safety, install priority traffic signals, enhance the visibility of bicycle priority lanes, and arrange bike parking lots and bike racks.

Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province, affirmed that the province’s policy is to invest in developing bicycle infrastructure to serve residents and visitors, while also hoping for a robust growth of cycling in the city.
The green urban project was approved by the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province in 2016, consisting of 10 construction packages. To date, the investor has completed the contractor selection process for all 10 packages, with a construction value of over 1 trillion VND.
