An agave plant, also known as the “century plant” (Agave americana), is said to bloom only once every 100 years. It has begun to unfurl its first brilliant yellow flowers at Hibiya Park in Tokyo, Japan.

According to a reporter in Tokyo, a staff member at Hibiya Park stated that the central stem of the agave, planted near the fountain in the park’s first flowerbed, began to grow on May 17. The first flowers began to bloom on July 10. The staff member remarked: “I heard that the flower buds started to bloom in order from the bottom to the top over a span of about a month. However, we are not certain as we have never seen this type of plant bloom before.”
This agave, which currently stands at 7.7 meters tall, is estimated to be over 60 years old, as there are photographs of the plant from around 1960. Another agave planted diagonally opposite it bloomed in July 2019.
Agave americana is a succulent plant that flowers only once in its lifetime. Therefore, both local residents and international tourists are flocking to the park to witness and capture this incredibly rare spectacle at Hibiya Park in Tokyo.
