According to calculations by MSN Money, the top 13 most expensive construction projects in the modern world are predominantly located in Asia, with the most “expensive” project amounting to $100 billion.
According to MSN Money, The Great Mosque of Mecca, known as Masjid al-Haram is the number one project valued at up to $100 billion, far surpassing all competitors. This is a sacred site where every Muslim is required to make a pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime, if possible.
In second place on MSN Money’s list is the Abraj Al-Bait Hotel (located next to Masjid al-Haram),
built by the King of Saudi Arabia to serve pilgrims, valued at $16 billion.
Third place goes to the “floating hotel” Marina Bay Sands
in Singapore, with a construction cost of $5.7 billion. This luxurious resort includes a hotel, casino, shopping mall, convention center, cinema, and museum… Spanning an area of 15.5 hectares, Marina Bay Sands features three towers and a 340-meter SkyPark on the roof. A fourth tower with 1,000 hotel rooms is planned for construction in 2026.
The SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, USA (costing $5.5 billion): Located in Inglewood, California, this stadium and entertainment complex has a capacity of 70,000, featuring a retractable roof and sliding doors for airflow. The fifth project is valued slightly lower at $5 billion, which is Apple’s new headquarters in Cupertino – the “spaceship” Apple Park. This complex includes a massive circular main building, seven cafes, 9,000 trees, a 1,000-seat Steve Jobs theater, and a gym over 9,200m2. Designed by architect Norman Foster, Apple Park serves the needs of 12,000 employees. Visitors can tour the open visitor center.
Ranked sixth is Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore (costing $4.93 billion): This expensive project located on Sentosa Island includes 6 hotels with a total of 1,800 rooms, Universal Studios Singapore theme park, a harbor, a range of retail stores, a casino, and the S.E.A. on the list is the Cosmopolitan Hotel in the “gambling paradise” of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, with a construction cost of $4.4 billion.
Eighth is the Wynn Palace, Macau, China (costing $4.2 billion): This resort and casino was completed in 2016, featuring the largest art collection in Macau. Currently, Wynn Palace has 1,706 luxury rooms, a spa, shopping area, and a performance lake. on the list is the New Trade Center (built on the site of the Twin Towers attacked in 2001) in New York, USA, with a construction cost of $4.1 billion.
Tenth
on the list is the Palace of Parliament (formerly known as the People’s Palace, now called the Romanian National Assembly) with a construction cost of $3.9 billion.
Eleventh
on the list is the Emirates Palace Hotel, majestic like a palace in the capital Abu Dhabi, UAE, with a construction cost of $3.8 billion.
Twelfth
on the list is Wynn Resorts in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, with a construction cost of $3.4 billion.
Thirteenth
on the list is the Istana Nurul Izzah Palace of the Sultan of Brunei, with a construction cost of $3.3 billion.
