A research team from the University of California, Irvine, will utilize 20 pigeons to monitor air pollution levels in San Jose, California.Each pigeon will wear a special backpack that contains a GPS satellite signal receiver, an air pollution sensor, and a mobile phone.
Data on air quality will be automatically sent via text messages to a special blog on the Internet, while images will be transmitted from above through a tiny camera attached to the pigeons’ chests. These pigeons are scheduled to be released for their mission on August 5.
