The research team from the University of Washington (USA) has discovered that the use of anticoagulant medication – warfarin, may increase the risk of osteoporosis in the elderly.
After studying 15,000 patients prescribed warfarin, the incidence of osteoporosis increased by 25% among those who had been on warfarin for over a year. Warfarin works by inhibiting the blood clotting role of vitamin K, thereby preventing clot formation. However, vitamin K also interacts with a protein that is essential for bone formation. Scientists recommend that individuals taking warfarin should engage in regular exercise and ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D. (Healthday)
