Isabelle thanks the donor family for helping her receive a new face |
Yesterday (February 6), a 38-year-old French woman who received a face transplant made her first public appearance with her new face since undergoing surgery last November.
She is referred to as Isabelle due to French privacy laws. Her surgery has raised numerous questions in the medical field.
Isabelle made her debut before the press at a press conference today at Amiens Hospital. The surgical team that performed the operation and continues to treat her was also present at the conference.
This groundbreaking face transplant surgery was conducted on November 27, 2005, in a city in northern France. After the surgery, Isabelle received treatment in Lyon.
The surgeon who operated on Isabelle, Bernard Devauchelle, stated that about three weeks ago, Isabelle was able to walk outside without drawing attention. At that time, she was capable of chatting and eating.
Isabelle received her new face from a brain-dead donor after suffering severe injuries from a dog bite, which had previously made it very difficult for her to speak and eat.
