The Mozilla Foundation has just released the Firefox 1.5.0.1 browser – the latest version of this open-source browser application.
According to information from the developers, version 1.5.0.1 has significantly improved stability and better support for the Mac OS X operating system. Additionally, Mozilla has fixed several security vulnerabilities and memory overflow issues that were discovered in version 1.5.
A new feature introduced in this version is that Firefox now supports International Domain Names (IDN) for Iceland – with the domain suffix “.is”.
Last week, it was reported that users who utilized the automatic update feature of version 1.5 found that the browser had automatically updated to version 1.5.0.1. At that time, the Mozilla Developer Center explained that this only occurred for those who had installed and used the beta version of Firefox 1.5, and therefore the browser recognized them as testers. This action led to the automatic update channel of the browser setting itself to update to the beta version 1.5.0.1. Consequently, some users complained that they had unexpectedly become testers for the new version of Firefox.
Due to this, the Mozilla Developer Center advised users to check the automatic update channel of the browser by opening the file “defaultsprefschannel-prefs.js” with a text editor to check the line “pref(“app.update.channel” “beta”;)” and change “beta” to “release”, then save and close the file.
As of now, Firefox 1.5.0.1 has been officially released, and users of Firefox 1.5 can either use the browser’s automatic update feature or download it directly from the developer’s website at http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/.
It can be said that Firefox 1.5.0.1 is part of Mozilla’s previously announced plan to release security feature updates for the browser every two months.
