VMware is a renowned software company that allows users to run multiple operating systems on their computers. Recently, they announced that they will be offering a free version of VMware Server.
The free VMware Server serves as an alternative to VMware GSX, which previously cost users up to $1400 for the dual-processor version and $2800 for multi-processor systems. VMware ESX is priced higher depending on user requirements and can handle many more advanced features. One of these features is that GSX Server requires operation under an operating system, such as Windows, while ESX Server can operate independently without an OS.
This move is seen as a new strategy by VMware to attract users to their software, alongside additional options and other commercial versions. Consequently, VMware aims to expand its market share in the software industry compared to its competitors. Moreover, users are likely to upgrade from the free GSX Server to the ESX Server version to access more advanced features.
The virtualization software will become a part of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server in the next versions of these operating systems. Microsoft also plans to integrate this technology into Longhorn Server.
VMware Server joins VMware Player on the list of free applications provided by VMware Inc. For additional information and to download the free version, click here.
