Internet Security Systems has issued a warning regarding security threats that are beginning to target all networked computers as Valentine’s Day approaches on February 14th.
Gunter Ollman, the director of Internet Security Systems (ISS), stated: ”Valentine’s Day is always the most profitable day of the year for cybercriminals. Currently, organized cybercrime is ready to cash in on this year’s Valentine’s Day. Our statistics show that February 14th is the day when computer systems are most vulnerable to all kinds of dangerous malware.”
Valentine’s Day is a time when lovers often spare no expense to please their partners. However, during this romantic season, those in love also tend to let their guard down while shopping online or searching for the most unique greeting cards to impress their loved ones. This creates a “golden opportunity” for hackers to strike.
ISS reports that the number of dating websites for those yearning for love has increased by approximately 17% compared to last year, and many of these romantic greeting sites are actually traps set by hackers designed to spread viruses, Trojans, and spyware for financial fraud or computer sabotage.
ISS strongly advises users in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day this year to absolutely avoid opening attachments from unfamiliar emails, regardless of how touching the messages may seem. It’s advisable not to visit unfamiliar e-card websites and to only use e-cards from websites that one has used for a long time. Make sure to update all antivirus tools available on your computer before February 14th.
