A video capturing three black circles seemingly made of smoke floating in the sky over Berlin, Germany, has stirred excitement on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
On July 4th, an Instagram account dedicated to Berlin news, @dasistberlinbitch, shared the video along with several clips showcasing different angles of the mysterious, thick black smoke circles appearing in the northern part of the city. The circles seem to be moving slowly. This footage has attracted hundreds of thousands of views to date.
In the video description, the account humorously asks: “So, are aliens trying to come to Berghain (a famous nightclub), or is God smoking shisha?”
On social media X, the tabloid B.Z. Berlin also commented: “What appeared on Wednesday night in North Berlin? Some clearly visible black circles in the sky. #Hauptstadt. The internet is buzzing.”
Theories from users online are incredibly diverse, ranging from birds flying in circles to the appearance of aliens with unidentified flying objects (UFOs).
However, a user named @030josef offered what seemed to be the most plausible explanation, suggesting that it was the result of a fireworks display. They wrote: “The cause is likely due to industrial activities or explosions releasing smoke into the air. Fireworks often create similar effects.”

This user speculated that the mysterious circles could be a result of a rehearsal by the rock band Rammstein, known for their spectacular fireworks displays.
Another user attributed the circles to industrial chimney emissions, created by black soot particles.
The fireworks theory was supported by another X user, @Joachim36911, who posted a photo of a fireball appearing among buildings, causing the black smoke ring to rise, along with the caption: “Not sure if this is the work of event technicians?”
In fact, similar circles have appeared in various locations around the world. In 2023, a similar circle was spotted in the sky over Moscow, Russia. It hovered for a while before ascending.
In 2014, a smoke ring appeared near Warwick Castle in England. It lingered in the sky for about three minutes and was captured by a girl with a smartphone. It was later explained as the result of a fireworks test.
In 2020, a similar incident caused a stir in Pakistan. According to The Sun, residents in Lahore were alarmed to see a thin black circle appear in the sky.
However, the article pointed out that an explosion at a power substation could also create such a circle. It emphasized that a black ring could also appear after a fireworks display.
